Mark LaChapelle, designer, artist, advertising and marketing veteran, developer of ambigrams, calligrapher.

I’ve been a type guy all my life. It started with doodling on book covers in school which led to an early career as a signpainter and pinstriper.

Calligraphy came later but never got to be a serious thing, more like a hobby (or therapy, it depends on your perspective). Every calligrapher gets enlisted to do certificates and wedding invitations, which becomes work pretty quickly. And, using a pen and ink was much easier to control than paint and a floppy brush.

My interest in ambigrams started with an album cover for the band Angel, back in the day. It was one of those things just sat in the back of my mind until recently with Dan Brown’s book Angel and Demons and the work of John Langdon.

I developed the ambigam for my daughter Lauren one evening, while curled up on the couch. Lindsay followed, and now I’m hooked.

We’ll see where this goes.
